  A first look @ brink..

Splash Damage is set to return with a new shooter, Brink, which was demoed at E3 for the first time.

Following very much in the tradition of their hugely popular Enemy Territory titles, Brink builds on much of the gameplay which has proved a winner for Splash Damage over the past few years.

Brink is set on the Ark, a marooned futuristic looking island city surrounded by water and it's here where the game's campaigns are set. Unlike Quake Wars: Enemy Territory, Brink promises a more complete gaming experience with a strong narrative. Essentially the game appears to be built around a co-op/multiplayer experience which is again objective based but has a compelling enough story to make the game just as fun playing co-op or single player.

BrinkAn area Splash Damage really pushed the boat out on this time around is character customisation. As players of Quake Wars will know, every player from each class looks the same but in Brink you build your character before you even start playing. The character customisation is immense with players able to customise everything from their tattoos to complete body and facial styles. What this means is that your character will look very unique and stick with you throughout your Brink experience. Splash Damage also say that the choice of character build will affect the way your character moves in-game so it will be interesting to actually see how this will work.

Despite there being character customisation, players can switch the class of their new styled character when inside a game. As Quake Wars players know, you could only switch class when you died, but in Brink you can switch at any point by utilising terminals dotted around the mission zone. This makes the game a lot more flexible and allows players to switch and hunt down objectives that will give them more experience points in the campaign.

There was one aspect of the game we were unsure about and that was the availability of vehicles. Unfortunately if you're a big fan of flying an Anansi in Quake Wars or taking the helm of a Dessacrator you may be a little disappointed. Brink focuses mainly on ground combat and we have been told the game will not feature vehicles like we have seen in Quake Wars. The development team are keen to point out, due to all the new features in Brink compared to previous Splash Damage titles, gamers will not miss the vehicle combat as Brink offers a new squad based shooter experience.

BrinkOne of the nicest control features in Brink is a system they are calling S.M.A.R.T (Smooth Movement Across Rugged Terrain) which brings a new method of moving your character over, under or around obstacles in the game. With a single button press, a player can hop over, climb or slide under an object. The game knows how to react when you face an obstacle and push the S.M.A.R.T button. This was demoed by looking at a ledge, hitting a single button which then moved your character up and over the obstacle. This may sound like some sort of scripted movement but it's anything but. You can stop the movement at any point and break out of the action which is essential if you're under fire and want to change your mind. From the demo that we saw this worked incredibly effectively. Splash Damage don't want the environment to be restrictive, it looks like you should be able to get over, around or under an object in the game.

The game itself is objective based and it's going to take a variety of class combos in a team to be successful, taking in a team of all Engineers is simple not going to work so once again it's up to the teams to get that balance right whether it be as a Heavy soldier, Engineer, Assault or Operative. This of course can be frustrating at times when it doesn't gel as a team, but when it does it is one of the most satisfying gaming experiences. To help balance things out, players who take the role other players have refused will get an extra bonus XP boost, so sometimes it's best to play a different class.

BrinkIn the demo at E3, a squad has to escort a robot to a location on the Container City Zone, which can best be described as the city port. Getting the robot there is not easy, the team has to coordinate to carry out XP enhancing objectives such as Engineers repairing a crane to lift the robot up a ledge, blowing up doorways and even interrogating enemy's with a very sinister looking electric probe. Most amusing.

Right now Splash Damage is looking at eight players in a co-op game which you can drop in and out of and 16 players in the on-line multiplayer. Although the game is coming on the 360, PS3 and PC, it will not be cross platform multiplayer.

We have to say that the game looks absolutely stunning, the location colours are super vibrant and ultra-realistic. Simply put, it's outstanding in the visuals department and it ran like a dream on the live demo, despite the fact all hell was breaking loose.

The game is due out some time in spring next year and this is one game you're going to have to keep a very close eye on, I know we are.
